Professional Learning Opportunities
Application for MDE Science Item Writing Teams
MDE is seeking science educators (teachers, researchers, curriculum specialists, etc.) to develop science
item clusters that assess the Michigan K-12 Science Standards for the State assessment.We are especially
seeking science educators working with diverse student populations and those from Northern Michigan
and Southwestern Michigan.
Science Item Cluster Writing Weeks for Summer 2017:
July 17-21, 2017 – Grade 11: East Lansing, MI
July 24-28, 2017 – Grade 5 & 8: Marquette, MI
Participants will receive a $250 per day stipend or SCECHs for their efforts. Those traveling
more than 50 miles from the designated location are eligible for lodging and mileage reimbursement.
Breakfast and lunch will be provided daily.
Those interested in participating in the Summer 2017 Item Cluster Development should complete
the Assessment Committee Application on our website.
Please note that the application does request
sample items aligned to the MSS. It is preferred that science educators have the following professional
learning; Next Generation Science Exemplar (NGSX), MISciPL@N Tier 1-3, Modeling in Michigan, or
have participated in research on NGSS/MSS.
The deadline to apply for Summer 2017 Science Item Cluster Development is May 16, 2017.
Applicants will be notified of their participation no later than May 30, 2017.
