Michigan State Board of Education Adopts New Michigan Science Standards!

November 10, 2015

 

The Michigan State Board of Education adopted a revolutionary and innovative set of Science Standards!  These new Michigan Science Standards will propel current and future Michigan students to increased levels of rigor in Science and Engineering practices.  The Michigan Department of Education used a combination of face to face informational sessions and online surveys engaging the Michigan Community in their understanding of what best practice scientific instruction and expectations hold for its students.  The adoption of the Michigan Science Standards directly correlates to State Superintendent Brian Whiston's vision of making Michigan a top ten state for education!

 

Science Educators, across this great state, will work in partnership with the Michigan Department of Education in implementing these new Michigan Science Standards providing guidance and resources for K-12 classroom teachers.  It is an exciting time to be a Science Instructor in the State of Michigan!

Great Opportunity for Middle School Science Teachers

This is big news! Our statewide team that has been putting on the Modeling Instruction workshops for high school teachers has gained more funding which allows us to offer a Modeling Instruction Workshop for Middle School teachers. Please see the attached flyer for the application process and please distribute to middle school teachers.

Some key features:

 

Facilitators: Colleen Megowan and George Nelson (Colleen is the Executive Director of the American Modeling Teachers Association)

Dates: June 29 – July 17, 2015 – yes, that's 15 awesome days – 8 AM – 4 PM (July 3rd will be a half day)

Location: Novi High School

Stipends: up to $1500

Travel Expenses: mileage and lodging for out of area teachers

AMTA Membership: one year provided

Application process: Interested teachers will complete an application and those selected will be sent a link to register.

FEBRUARY 2015

I. Project 2061 Launches New WeatherSchool@AAAS Website 

Designed for middle- and high-school students and teachers, the new WeatherSchool@AAAS site uses real-world data collected from around the globe to teach fundamentals about weather and climate. In a series of interactive modules that include graphing tools, data sets, guided activities, and quizzes, students learn how moving air masses can cause day-to-day temperature variation, how geographic factors such as elevation above sea level can influence temperature at any given location, and how the movement of the earth in relation to the sun can affect temperature over the course of a year. The new site is consistent with recommendations in the Next Generation Science Standards and encourages teachers to integrate the core ideas that students are learning with the practices of science, such as generating data, creating graphs and tables, and looking at relationships and patterns. Read more Explore the site.
