Science: Flint Science Fair

Subject: Regional Science Fair News and Reminder

Now is a great time for kids to start thinking about projects for the Flint Regional Science Fair and any local school or district fairs. The 2015 Flint Regional Science Fair, which serves our students, will be March 20-22, 2015 on the campus of Kettering University in Flint. Posters and tri-fold brochures were sent in November.

Please encourage students in grades 4 through 12 to visit www.flintsciencefair.org. Registration procedures have changed this year. Students whose projects will require special handling or permissions due to hazardous materials, safety or ethical issues will find the Rules Wizard especially helpful.

The web site has many useful helps and links to other useful sites for science fair projects and other fun science related stuff, as well as Registering. Help topics include: Planning a Good Science Fair Project, Writing a Scientific Report, the Scientific Method, Getting Started, Project Idea Tool, etc.

The web site also has a lot of useful information for teachers and parents including a PowerPoint presentation, a Handbook for Teachers, the FRSF Handbook and on-line registration.

Teachers are encouraged to sign up as judges for the fair—it is a great way to get started, especially if you have not had experience with science fairs. There is a Judges section on the web site.

School field trips to view fair projects can be scheduled for Monday March 23.

Special note -- Our regional fair, the Flint Regional Science Fair, is a member of Society for Science & the Public's (SSP) fair network. As such, high school participants in the FRSF can become eligible to compete in the INTEL International Science & Engineering Fair www.societyforscience.org/isef , and up to 10% of students in grades 5-8 can be nominated to participate in the Broadcom MASTERS Middle School Program https://student.societyforscience.org/broadcom-masters . Each year two senior division winners receive an expense paid trip to compete in ISEF (2015 is in Pittsburgh) and two students in grades 9 or 10 are sponsored to attend as Observers.

The Science Fair Handbook is available on line. Questions should be directed to director@flintsciencefair.org
